Image Maker | Explorer | Storyteller
These words not only drive photographer Larry Johnson, they define him. For most of his working life he worked as a globally recognized educational technologist and futurist; these roles took him to more than 125 countries and every continent but Antarctica. From the time he was a teenager, a camera was always at hand. His work provided him with an endless stream of new places and people to photograph and new stories to tell. His photos have been featured in magazines, websites, and advertisements for over 20 years.
Over the years, his interests in the various aspects of photography evolved, and he found himself working with some incredible mentors, such as Bill Frakes, of Sports Illustrated fame, and storytellers and visual artists like Daniel Cox, Bill Allred and Jody Cobb of the National Geographic, to fashion and art photographers like Jarmo Pohjaniemi, Aleš Bravničar, Josh Ryan and Lindsay Adler. These influences made an indelible impact on every way in which he approaches a shoot and helped to shape his unique style and visual sensibilities, across a wide range of subjects, including wildlife, travel, sports, storytelling, and ultimately, fashion and beauty.
Along the way, he has provided still and video production services for dozens of high profile customers and collaborators, including the OECD, UNESCO, Hewlett Packard, IBM, Dell, and Microsoft, as well as dozens of major publications including Maxim, Sports Illustrated, National Geographic, Playboy, Afar, Greenwich People, and many more.
Among the many destinations and locations his work has taken him to in the last few years are Bali, Santorini, the Bahamas, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doja, Tanzania, Shanghai, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, and major cities across the US, Europe, and Asia.
As the working world of photography changed with the advent of digital tools, Johnson began to shift his professional focus to fashion and beauty, building on his years of experience shooting wildlife, nature, travel, and sports for magazines and other publications. Today, his work is primarily focused on fashion and beauty, with a strong editorial component.
His work is described as colorful, bold, and dynamic.
